Stomping Out Malaria in Africa ….. What audacity! What bravado!
Yet this is exactly the challenge that Peace Corps Cameroon Volunteers have decided to undertake. What’s more, we sincerely believe that that we can succeed in this task!
Malaria is the number one killer of children under 5 years old in Cameroon. Over 40% of all healthcare costs in Africa are associated with malaria prevention, diagnosis, and treatment. This does not even take into consideration the financial and educative losses associated with treating malaria within each family. This number is multiplied when we extrapolate the figures for an entire community, district, region, country, and continent.
With around 200 volunteers working in all 10 regions of Cameroon, we have come together and assessed the cost at the community level and we are saying ENOUGH IS ENOUGH!
In response, we are uniting with Peace Corps Volunteers throughout Africa through the Stomping Out Malaria Initiative and also with other local government health partners and the private sector to work together towards eradicating malaria from our communities, districts, regions, countries, and from the entire continent by 2015.
It takes audacity and bravado to claim such a lofty goal, but it also takes a lot of work and a cross-cutting plan of action. Cameroon is up for the challenge and we believe that we can succeed!
