Stomp Out Zambia uses SMS and Mass Email to let ALL PCVs know about World Malaria Day

Reminder: World Malaria Day is April 25th and Peace Corps would like all volunteers and staff to get involved! All over Africa, Peace Corps is scaling-up their efforts on malaria control and last year on World Malaria Day 2011, the CDC, PMI/USAID, and Peace Corps launched the Stomping Out Malaria in Africa Initiative, to encourage PCVs to become involved in implementing more malaria projects/activities in their local villages, strengthening relationships with organizations involved in malaria, and promoting advocacy and communications.
Peace Corps Zambia has a new Malaria Coordinator, Jane Coleman, who will be with us for 9 months as a Response Volunteer, to help ALL the volunteers and staff scale-up malaria projects, awareness, resources, and let Peace Corps worldwide know—- Zambia is “Stomping Out Malaria”. So, with World Malaria Day right around the corner- what are YOU doing to do on that day? The PC office is currently working with the U.S. Embassy and the National Malaria Control Centre on large scale events in Lusaka and Kasama, but we want YOU and your counterpart and everyone in your village to get involved! Organize a football match and give a malaria health talk during half time, round up the troops for a parade in your village, get your community health workers involved, write a SPA grant for net distribution and educate your village!
Make World Malaria Day as big as World Aids Day (remember: malaria is the biggest health problem facing Zambia right now) The worldwide theme this year for World Malaria Day is: “Sustain Gains, Saves Lives: Invest in Africa” USAID is promoting: “Every Child Deserves a 5th Birthday” Malaria No More and Speak Up Africa are promoting: “Dream Banners”  The concept is for children to draw what they want to be when they grow up, then tie the picture to their mosquito net, reminding them that malaria prevention helps them to grow up healthy and reach their dreams. Use these concepts, use the same theme and —-spread the news! Make T-shirts, write about the big day on your Facebook wall, write about it in your blog, take photos of the Dream Banners! All ideas, projects, and activities (small or big) are wonderful and should be reported. Take photos and write to Jane Coleman about your action plan (and remember there is still SPA funding for malaria projects- take advantage of it).
All month, Jane (based at the PC office in Lusaka) and other Stomp Out countries in Africa will be BAMM-ing ‘Blogg about Malaria Month’ and we want YOU to share your tweets, FB posts, photos, concept ideas, and activities with Jane and she will spread the word of what PCVs are doing in Zambia.
PC Washington is really involved with Stomp Out and will be putting out press releases on what volunteers are doing for World Malaria Day—so act quickly and let your APCD and Jane Coleman know what YOU have planned, and we will spread the word and Stomp Out malaria together. Contact Jane for more ideas and what YOU have planned for World Malaria Day 2012
